New Law Creates New Agency. The Devolution Society, currently chaired by consumer advocate Ralph Nader, has been in existence for the past 25 years with a mission to stop the continued evolution of the human species. Senate bill 1156 would make it an official government agency. The Society's past victories include mandatory warning labels and helmet and seatbelt laws. For example, "The Dev", as members call it, was behind the warning label "Point away from face" on oven cleaner and the now famous "Do not use while bathing" on hair dryers. Current activity is focused on making sure no one tries at home what they see on TV. MTV's Jackass is not worried. "I'm not worried," says Jack Ass, "I think that, in time, people will come to recognize the service I am providing. Although I keep telling kids not to try the stuff I do, I really don't mean it." Critics often confuse the group with anti-evolutionists or creationists, which is not a fair comparison, according to Nader. "It's not that we don't believe evolution is real," says Nader, "we just don't think it's a good thing." The new bill, known as the "Simpleton's Self-Protection Act of 2001", comes up for a vote next week. Tweet |
